This project aims to revitalize a unique area in the Alsancak district of İzmir, preserving the traces of its past.

When we look at the history of Alsancak, we see the presence of old ferhane structures. These buildings served as public spaces catering to workers and the general public across various sectors, housing businesses and workshops. In the 1900s, this area was home to an old tobacco factory, which later burned down in a tragic fire, resulting in the loss of 19 female workers' lives. Subsequently, the area housed textile factories.

In our project, we reinterpret this historical texture by transforming the ferhane structures into new spaces that function like streets. Each "street" is divided into different functions such as gastronomy, textiles, handicrafts, and ecological local markets. These streets converge in semi-open spaces, creating gathering spots for people. The building is designed to cater to the working class, providing shops, workshops, and seminar spaces. The ground floor is entirely open to the public, featuring commercial spaces and workshops. On the upper floors, there are more private areas such as conference rooms, classrooms, a library, and offices. The basement includes workspaces and a cistern for collecting and recycling rainwater.

Additionally, the outdoor area features a canopy made from textile waste sourced from the Kemalettin Fashion Center. This canopy will be renewed 3-4 times a year, becoming a ritual that includes food, music, concerts, and various events.

The overall aim of the project is to create a space where the working class and the general public can gather, support each other, and foster a culture of solidarity and cooperation. Our project respects the historical use of the area while aiming for a better quality of life through unity in the future. By preserving our memories and keeping them alive, we aspire to create a place where people can live together harmoniously, both today and in the future.
